EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY DAVID LYLE

Suite Five Salon announces an exhibition of work by New York artist, David Lyle, February 5 – March 29, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, February 7, from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

David Lyle acts as both curator and painter, sifting through a vast array of lost snapshots from the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s found at thrift stores, garage sales, e-bay auctions, and flea markets. His oil paintings mimic their found photo authenticity and achieve a sense of nostalgia and memory. Generally, the paintings  are made of black and sepia tones, which take on a nostalgic or cinematic mood. They almost have a voyeuristic feel to them, as if the subject or subjects are unaware that they are being watched.

In his own words, David Lyle describes his paintings, “I feel that to find a lost photo and paint it, allows the photo and the memory to have a second life. Although I don’t know the people in the paintings, I can relate to certain memories and times in my own life”

For more information about David Lyle and his work, contact Heather Marx Gallery, San Francisco.

Join Suite Five Salon for a holiday celebration of its one-year anniversary and the opening of an exhibition of paintings by San Francisco artist Lisa Lightman, on view December 6, 2007 through January 31, 2008. The party and artist reception will be held on Thursday, December 6, from 7:00 to 10:00pm.

Lisa Lightman is a San Francisco-based artist whose intricate, mixed-media collages and paintings employ a deeply personal and singular language that reflects her ongoing engagement with the subconscious. Lightman refers to her constructions as “states of mind” and they are the result on an ongoing, iterative process that involves a building up and breaking down of the surface. The processes of drawing, painting, rubbing, scratching, layering, and excavating are clearly evident and speak not only to Lightman’s extensive mining of her interior self but also her responses to external political and cultural stimuli.

A range of influences from the multilayered paintings of Howard Hodgkins to the rhythmic, calligraphic works of Cy Twombly manifest themselves in these highly emotive works. However, the symbology, sophisticated palette, and pop surrealist mark-making manifest Lightman’s own internal investigations. Exhibition of work by EMILY SEVIER

Suite Five Salon announces an exhibition of work by San Francisco artist Emily Sevier, October 4 – December 1, 2007. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, October 4, from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

Emily Sevier is a San Francisco-based artist whose work explores and questions contemporary concepts of beauty. Working in both two- and three-dimensional formats and employing a deliberately childlike aesthetic, Sevier examines the normative social values that underlie our assumptions about what is good and what is bad.

Sevier draws on fables and fairy tales to create sculptures, paintings, and drawings whose simplicity of form and playful, lighthearted references to romantic ideals belie the sincerity of its critical subject, which is, in Sevier’s words, “a sugarcoated grotesque of the human quest for perfection and attempt to improve upon nature.”

Emily Sevier is an artist, arts administrator and independent curator. She has exhibited in the Bay Area and abroad, and has curated shows for organizations including Southern Exposure and Mission 17. In her life as an arts administrator Emily has worked with Southern Exposure, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the James Irvine Foundation, and the Center for Cultural Innovation. Emily received her BFA in 1999 from Washington University in St. Louis with an emphasis on painting and minor in art history. Paintings by Tina Vietmeier

posted by Suite 5 on August 25, 2007 in ART EXHIBITS, EVENTS

Suite Five Salon announces an exhibition of paintings by San Francisco artist Tina Vietmeier, August 7 through September 29, 2007. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, September 6, from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

Vietmeier is a British-born artist whose chosen medium is encaustic-an ancient artistic practice that consists of beeswax, crystalline pigment, and tree resin applied on a firm ground, in this case, wood panel. Vietmeier extends the process to incorporate modern materials such as recycled papers, graphite pencil, and discarded or used objects to create works that are spare in imagery but rich in color and light. The artist builds up the surfaces and then breaks them down in a manner that Vietmeier likens to an archeological dig, with “everyday” imagery buried and revealed within the successive layers. The texture, media, and symbology come together to create a visual experience that is at once timeless and deeply personal.

For more information about Tina Vietmeier and her work, visit http://www.tinalaurenvietmeier.com. Tina Vietmeier is represented by the Andrea Schwartz Gallery, San Francisco.
