Exhibition of Paintings by KOCH

koch_evite.jpg

Suite Five Salon announces an exhibition of work by San Francisco artist, Koch, August 7 – September 27, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, August 7, from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

The San Francisco artist Koch is very much informed by “the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism” and he himself has stated Jack Jefferson and early Frank Lobdell works as an influence. The artist’s dark and  “non-decorative” pallet of burnt umbers and raw sienna are emotive. However, the paintings entice the viewer’s eye to grapple between the macro and micro. The subsequent abstract planes are created by the raw power of simple and abstract brushstrokes.

For more information about Koch and his work, contact DoyleCrane Fine Art.

Suite Five Salon features bimonthly, rotating art installations highlighting contemporary artists from San Francisco. The salon holds free bimonthly openings in conjunction with downtown’s First Thursdays. Please contact 415-362-5005 for more information.

Exhibition of Paintings by MEL PREST

Suite Five Salon announces an exhibition of work by San Francisco artist, Mel Prest,
June 5 – August 2, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, June 5, from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

San Francisco artist Mel Prest combines hues and marks to form simple color patterns which constitute a multi-dimensional architecture based on physical landscapes and rhythmic vibrations. Prest’s hand-painted lines pulsate against her effortless grid planes, creating a synesthesia of perspective. The viewer must focus and re-focus the eye to apprehend undulating lines that distend and contract, shifting in both connotation and appearance in a single gaze. Her paintings are optical quandaries that act as visual metaphors for three-dimensional form.

Mel Prest’s recent exhibitions include Contemporary Perspectives at the MOCA, Santa Rosa, California, 2005; The Line Up, San Francisco Art Institute, 2004; Bowerhaus, the Bower, San Antonio, Texas, 2003; and Open Line, a solo show at the Gregory Lind Gallery, 2003. Prest received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from Mills College and presently lives and works in San Francisco. She was Artist in Residence at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 2004 and an Affiliate Artist in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts from 2002 to 2005.

For more information about Mel Prest and her work, contact Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco.

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY CORNELIA SCHULZ

posted by Suite 5 on March 22, 2008 in ANNOUNCEMENTS, ART EXHIBITS, EVENTS

evite_corneliaschulz.jpg

Suite Five Salon announces a new installation of work by Bay Area painter Cornelia Schulz, April 3–May 31, 2008. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 3 from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

Schulz’s paintings are sophisticated puzzle-like combines that are as much about sculpture as they are about painting. Schulz plays with the tradition of “shaped canvases,” a term that refers to two-dimensional paintings that do not conform to a rectangular configuration. Schulz mounts individual blocks of painted canvas on to irregularly shaped boards, and then joins them into one cohesive, integrated whole.

Different techniques and materials, such as coating the canvas with alkyd (a polyester-based resin), dripping oil paint, and spilling pools of ink, coupled with a subtle but still intense color palette offer elements of surprise within a carefully considered, tightly controlled structure. By deviating from the rectangle, Schulz is able to extend her imagery beyond the confines of four linear “walls.” However, the juxtapositions within the paint surfaces and the elegant, biomorphic patterns draw the viewer deeper into each individual form, creating a subtle tension between the painting’s external edge and its internal contradictions.

For more information about Cornelia Schulz and her work, you may also visit Patricia Sweetow Gallery.

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY DAVID LYLE

posted by Suite 5 on January 14, 2008 in ANNOUNCEMENTS, ART EXHIBITS, PRESS, EVENTS

evite_davidlyle.jpg

Suite Five Salon announces an exhibition of work by New York artist, David Lyle, February 5 – March 29, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, February 7, from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

David Lyle acts as both curator and painter, sifting through a vast array of lost snapshots from the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s found at thrift stores, garage sales, e-bay auctions, and flea markets. His oil paintings mimic their found photo authenticity and achieve a sense of nostalgia and memory. Generally, the paintings  are made of black and sepia tones, which take on a nostalgic or cinematic mood. They almost have a voyeuristic feel to them, as if the subject or subjects are unaware that they are being watched.

In his own words, David Lyle describes his paintings, “I feel that to find a lost photo and paint it, allows the photo and the memory to have a second life. Although I don’t know the people in the paintings, I can relate to certain memories and times in my own life”

For more information about David Lyle and his work, contact Heather Marx Gallery, San Francisco.

Suite Five Salon features bimonthly, rotating art installations highlighting contemporary artists. The salon holds free bimonthly openings in conjunction with downtown’s First Thursdays. Please contact 415-362-5005 for more information.

Exhibition of work by LISA LIGHTMAN

evite_lisalightman.jpg

Join Suite Five Salon for a holiday celebration of its one-year anniversary and the opening of an exhibition of paintings by San Francisco artist Lisa Lightman, on view December 6, 2007 through January 31, 2008. The party and artist reception will be held on Thursday, December 6, from 7:00 to 10:00pm.

Lisa Lightman is a San Francisco-based artist whose intricate, mixed-media collages and paintings employ a deeply personal and singular language that reflects her ongoing engagement with the subconscious. Lightman refers to her constructions as “states of mind” and they are the result on an ongoing, iterative process that involves a building up and breaking down of the surface. The processes of drawing, painting, rubbing, scratching, layering, and excavating are clearly evident and speak not only to Lightman’s extensive mining of her interior self but also her responses to external political and cultural stimuli.

A range of influences from the multilayered paintings of Howard Hodgkins to the rhythmic, calligraphic works of Cy Twombly manifest themselves in these highly emotive works. However, the symbology, sophisticated palette, and pop surrealist mark-making manifest Lightman’s own internal investigations. For more information about Lisa Lightman and her work, visit www.lisalightman.com.
